Contemporary paintings-characterized by new textures, unvarnished surfaces or matte finishes-have new aesthetic values that should be strictly respected by conservators. This often leads conservators to establish unconventional treatment methodologies and materials that include the retouching of areas with losses. This research presents the case of the retouching process carried out on several large paintings by the artist Manuel Padorno (1933-2002), considered one of the most important Spanish painters in the second half of the 20 th century. Because of his creative process-distinguished by his freedom in the use of materials and techniques-some of his paintings now have significant conservation problems. This damage includes large losses and major cracks that have required unconventional retouching due to their particular shine, volume and saturation characteristics. In this case, the retouching of some large losses located in highly saturated and matte areas (some of them made up of synthetic gesso impastos) required the use of coloured synthetic fillers, instead of two separate layers of stucco and retouching, as the tested samples provided a glossier or more satin finish which prevented complete visual integration at the required level of saturation. The retouching methodology includes the preparation of coloured filler samples-using different synthetic reversible binders-to obtain an exact match not only in terms of colour, but also shine. The results showed that the use of these coloured fillers produces extremely matte and saturated colours that can be retouched afterwards if necessary. Wet-on-wet application, which produces complete visual reintegration in the original impasto areas, can also be achieved.

Archetype recoge los trabajos presentados en el
congreso Modern Conservation: What’s new? celebrado
en la Wallace Collection (Londres) en Octubre de 2014,
organizada por el Grupo de Pintura ICON perteneciente
al International Institute for Conservation of Historic
and Artistic Works (IIC). En ella se reúnen una serie
de trabajos con innovadores enfoques sobre técnicas,
metodologías y materiales empleados en tratamientos
de conservación-restauración, con especial atención
a los desafíos planteados por las obras pictóricas
contemporáneas.

Desde que Walter Benjamin escribiera hace más de cuatro
décadas su célebre obra La obra de arte en la época de su
reproductibilidad técnica muchos son los enfoques y nociones
que han debido reformularse en torno al concepto de
autenticidad de la obra de arte contemporánea. Aspectos
como su montaje, conservación y restauración, son
constantemente revisados a la luz de la interpretación de su
supuesta intencionalidad artística, en muchas ocasiones en
permanente cambio. Y es en este terreno tan complejo en el
que se sitúa esta publicación de Archetype, en el que diversos
autores reflexionan al respecto y presentan sus contribuciones
al Congreso con el mismo título, celebrado en Glasgow en
Diciembre de 2014, y tercero de una serie de tres eventos con
esta temática organizados por la Red NECCAR y financiada
por la organización holandesa de investigación fundamental
(NWO).

Los artículos compilados en esta publicación incluyen
los trabajos presentados en la conferencia Appearance
and Reality: Examining Colour Change in Paintings,
celebrado en la Tate Gallery (Londres) en Octubre
de 2015 y publicados por la editorial Archetype en
colaboración con el Grupo de Pintura ICON (The
Institute of Conservation), organizador de la misma.
En él se recogen un interesante grupo de artículos
de autores de ámbito internacional en torno a la
temática de los cambios cromáticos que afectan a las
pinturas en su más amplio sentido, incluyendo desde
obras tradicionales a contemporáneas. Dentro de la
problemática abordada se ofrecen diferentes puntos
de vista como las intervenciones de restauración que
afrontan los cambios cromáticos afectan a ciertas
pinturas, los métodos de iluminación, los sistemas de
monitorización de los cambios cromáticos o cómo estos
influyen en los métodos de presentación y exposición.

As in previous centuries, the art of the 20th century has been
influenced by technological, scientific and industrial advances.
Thus, significant developments in the plastics industry and
its huge cultural and historical impact has turned plastic into
one of the most relevant materials in modern and contemporary
art. Improved
accessibility, low cost, more speed in the artistic process, enhanced properties and aesthetic qualities
are circumstances that did not go unnoticed by modern and
contemporary artists

Since the opening of the Veterinarian Museum of the Complutense
University of Madrid a few years ago, we have revised the museological
and museography projects, which deal with very significant and
peculiar collections. We found a diverse group composed of more
than 3000 pieces including historic, scientific and artistic heritage
coming from different fields of the veterinarian science and profession.
In this communication, we describe the docent and research
possibilities of these collections, the types of visits and proposed
routes according to the museological project. We will show the group
of pieces preferred by different visitors (school and university students,
general public, retired veterinarians, scholars and researchers,
institutional, public..). The visits include science dissemination
programs as Science Week address to primary and secondary school
students. After the comprehensive study of these visits, we will be
able to design future dissemination plans searching collaboration with
diverse institutions and organizations.
We are considering from our experience the benefits and
disadvantages of student collaboration in university museums. We
describe the work done in documentation and cataloguing, research
of collections, conservation and restoration of objects and specimens,
exhibition design and installation projects and communication
activities. Finally, we describe the challenges associated to security
and conservation, which will influence new proposals.

Dry-cleaning systems are an interesting alternative for the elimination of superficial dirt deposited on matt paints since they present remarkable advantages regarding the employment of organic solvents or surfactants. However, sometimes, the use of some of these materials can cause other undesirable effects, especially in regard to the increase in surface gloss of the work, substantially altering the appearance of matt paints. In this work, dry cleaning materials such as polymeric sponges and cloths of different composition are evaluated, both for general use and specific for the cleaning of cultural goods, and their effects on some matt pictorial materials currently used are studied. In this way, the degree of effectiveness of these cleaning systems is evaluated, the possible residues left by each of the tested materials, as well as the alterations that may have occurred on the pictorial surface.

Los sistemas de limpieza en seco son una interesante alternativa para la eliminación de suciedad
superficial depositada sobre pinturas mates ya que presentan notables ventajas con respecto al
empleo de disolventes orgánicos o de agentes tensoactivos. Sin embargo, en ocasiones, el
empleo de algunos de estos materiales puede provocar otros efectos no deseados, en especial en
lo que se refiere al aumento de brillo superficial de la obra, alterando sustancialmente la
apariencia de las pinturas mates.
En este trabajo se evalúan materiales de limpieza en seco tales como esponjas poliméricas y
paños de diferente composición, tanto de uso general como específicos para limpieza de bienes
culturales, y se estudian sus efectos sobre algunos materiales pictóricos de carácter mate
empleados actualmente. De este modo, se evalúa el grado de eficacia de estos sistemas de
limpieza, los posibles residuos dejados por cada uno de los materiales ensayados, así como las
alteraciones que se pudieran haber producido sobre la superficie pictórica.

Resumen En el contexto de la fotografía artística contemporánea, uno de los sistemas de montaje y exhibición más relevantes de los últimos años ha sido el denominado face-mounting. Este tipo de montaje, con gran presencia en las más relevantes colec-ciones a nivel internacional, plantea importantes problemas de conservación, muchos de ellos asociados a una incorrecta manipulación en el ámbito de la galería y el museo. Se hace necesario, por tanto, establecer unos parámetros de conservación adaptados, realistas y asumibles para el conser-vador-restaurador, que le permitan manipular este tipo de obras, reduciendo los riesgos a los que se exponen este tipo de montajes fotográficos durante su manipulación. Este trabajo, situado en el contexto de una amplia investigación que se viene realizando sobre la conservación de este tipo de montajes, analiza los diferentes tipos de deterioros que sufren estas obras, sus causas, y establece medidas apropiadas en el ámbito de la conservación preventiva.

Abstract In the context of contemporary art photography, one of the most relevant mounting and exhibition systems in recent years has been the so-called face-mounting. This type of mounting, with great presence in the most relevant collections at international level, raises important conservation problems, many of them associated with an incorrect handling in the field of the gallery and the museum. Therefore, it becomes necessary to establish an adapted, easily accessible, and realistic protocol for the conservator-restorer, that allows him to manipulate this type of works, reducing the risks produced in the handling this type of photographic mounting. This paper, located in the context of extensive research that has been carried out on the conservation of this type of mountings, analyses the different types of deteriorations suffered by these works, their causes, and establishes appropriate measures in the field of preventive conservation.

En el ámbito del Arte Contemporáneo, dispositivos como fotocopiadoras e impresoras láser se han convertido en herramientas artísticas de primer orden. Además de su empleo en diferentes manifestaciones artísticas, las imágenes electrográficas por ellas generadas pueden ser trasladadas a otros soportes artísticos mediante procesos de transferencia. El uso de esta práctica artística, iniciada en los años 60, ha ido incrementándose en las últimas décadas y actualmente tiene una gran proyección debido a sus enormes posibilidades expresivas. Este trabajo aborda los fundamentos de esta práctica artística, así como el estudio de algunos parámetros que afectan a su estabilidad. Se parte del análisis de la composición del tóner seleccionado realizado mediante espectroscopía FTIR y se aborda el ensayo de transferencia mediante disolución y temperatura sobre diferentes soportes receptores, el estudio del rango de temperaturas óptimas de transferencia, y se evalúa la variación cromática del tóner transferido por acción de la radiación ultravioleta.
// In the field of Contemporary Art, devices such as photocopiers and laser printers have become first-rate artistic tools. In addition to its use in different artistic manifestations, the electrographic images generated by them can be transferred to other artistic media through transfer processes. The use of this artistic practice, initiated in the 60s, has been increasing in recent decades and currently has a great projection due to its enormous expressive possibilities. This work addresses the fundamentals of this artistic practice, as well as the study of some parameters that affect its stability. It is based on the analysis of the composition of the selected toner performed by FTIR spectroscopy and the transfer test is addressed by dissolution and temperature on different receiving supports, the study of the range of optimal transfer temperatures, and the chromatic variation of the toner transferred by ultraviolet radiation action.

Actualmente, una gran parte de las colecciones de diseño industrial contemporáneo incluyen multitud de piezas fabricadas en materiales plásticos. Estos objetos plantean una problemática específica en cuanto a su identificación material. Por otra parte, imprescindible para la elección adecuada de los tratamientos de conservación restauración. En este trabajo se aborda la problemática asociada a la identificación de este tipo de materiales, a partir de diversos ejemplos, todos ellos relacionados con el estudio de objetos de diseño industrial contemporáneo fabricados en plástico. Se detallan los principales parámetros a considerar para resolver estas situaciones atendiendo al estudio de las pieza y su tecnología, características físicas, deterioros, marcas comerciales y de patente, etc. Estos resultados previos se completan con los obtenidos mediante el empleo de la espectroscopia FTIR, técnica analítica que puede aportar interesantes datos en la identificación tanto del polímero como de otros importantes aditivos o cargas presentes en su composición. / Nowadays, a large part of contemporary industrial design collections includes a multitude of pieces made of plastic materials. These objects pose a special problem regarding its material identification. Moreover, it is essential for the election of adequate conservation-restoration treatments. This paper addresses the problems associated with the identification of this type of materials, based on several examples, all of them related to the study of objects of modern industrial design manufactured in plastic. The main parameters to consider to solve these situations are detailed attending to the study of the piece and its technology, physical characteristics, deteriorations, commercial and patent marks, etc. This previous delimitation is completed with the use of FTIR spectroscopy, an analytical technique that can provide relevant data for the polymer, additives or fillers identification.

The intrinsic properties of the wax, its ability to melt, solidify and change shape as well as its malleability, its accurate color, character and credibility evergreen that achieved, made it particularly suited to cross the limits of nature. Empower the wax with the ability to replicate life reached during the 18th Century, its peak with the construction of anatomical models. The Ceroplastic, understood as a refined form of sculpture made with alternative materials to traditional, founded in anatomy a remarkable job with exceptional level of artistic results. These pieces reveal to the viewer’s eyes profane, secret aspects of a particular craft. The history of these is also the story of a specific material.

Las propiedades intrínsecas de la cera, su capacidad de fundirse, solidificarse y cambiar de forma, así como su maleabilidad, su coloración fidedigna, su carácter imperecedero y la verosimilitud que permitía alcanzar, la hacían particularmente adecuada para atravesar los límites de la naturaleza. Dar poderes a la cera con la capacidad de replicar la vida alcanzó, durante el siglo XVIII, su máxima expresión con la construcción de modelos anatómicos. La ceroplástica, entendida como una refinada forma de escultura realizada con materiales alternativos a los tradicionales, encontró en la anatomía un notable empleo con resultados artísticos de excepcional nivel.

In recent years, university museums have been subject to growing interest from the scientific community. Their collections are composed of objects whose nature varies,
allowing the visitor and the researcher to make a visual tour of the different scientific disciplines. This paper analyses the main agents of deterioration that affect a specific type of cultural heritage exhibit, the anatomical models made of organic materials (wax, natural hair, horsehair, vegetable fibres, dyes, natural resins, etc.), which are highly sensitive to environmental agents, and it proposes strategies for the preventive conservation of collections consisting of such items. The Faculty of Medicine at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) has one of the most important collections of such models in Europe, containing true works of art which combine scientific rigor with the aesthetic taste of the 18th century.

En los últimos años, los museos universitarios han sido objeto de un interés cada vez mayor por parte de la comunidad científica. Sus colecciones incluyen objetos de varia naturaleza, lo que permite al visitante y al investigador dar una vuelta visiva por las distintas disciplinas científicas. Este artículo analiza los principales agentes de deterioro que afectan una tipología concreta de bienes culturales expuestos: los modelos
anatómicos realizados en materiales orgánicos (cera, pelo humano, crin de caballo, fibras vegetales, colorantes, resinas naturales, etc.) muy sensibles a los agentes medioambientales y sugiere estrategias para la conservación preventiva de colecciones formadas por dichos elementos. La Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) posee una colección de estos modelos considerada entre las más importantes en Europa, una colección que conserva verdaderas obras de arte que combinan el rigor científico con el gusto estético del siglo XVIII.

Several documents, some of them never before published, are here examined in order to illustrate the dynamics surrounding the production of wax sculpture at the Royal College of Surgery of Saint Carlos in Madrid, during the period 1786 to 1805. Their contents allow for the better understanding of the procedures as well as the activities of this anatomical cabinet. Also studied are the data relating to those surgeons, master sculptors in wax and their assistants who participated in the creation of this collection.

Se relacionan algunos documentos, muchos de los cuales son inéditos, con la intención de ilustrar algunas dinámicas concernientes a la producción ceroplástica que se llevó a cabo durante el período de 1786 a 1805 en el Real Colegio de Cirugía de San Carlos, de Madrid, cuyos contenidos permiten comprender mejor tanto la gestión como la actividad del citado gabinete anatómico. Asimismo, se exponen y analizan los datos relativos a los cirujanos, maestros cero-escultores y ayudantes que participaron en la creación de la colección.

From an anthropological point of view wax is considered one of the most suitable materials for the representation of the human body due to its unique ability to appear similar to its appearance and to imitate the qualities of skin and simulate the fl esh. When observing an artifi cial anatomical model our glance delights in view to the extraordinary manual skill developed by the cra􀄞 sman for achieving the maximum likeliness with the original, but it can also be surprised at the unease caused by the short distance between the corpse and its waxy body representation, since it is just a replacement, a passage from real to imaginary.
This paper provides an overview of the diff erent types of wax objects made in the past with the intention of defeating
the death or the disease suggesting the presence of life by the resemblance between the appearance of the image and the person who is not present anymore.

Desde el punto de vista antropológico se considera a la cera como uno de los materiales más adecuados para la representación del cuerpo humano debido a su peculiar capacidad para mostrarse similar a su aspecto físico y
para imitar las calidades de la piel y simular la carne. Al observar un modelo artificial anatómico nuestra mirada se deleita ante la extraordinaria habilidad manual desarrollada por el creador para alcanzar la máxima verosimilitud con el original, pero también puede verse sorprendida por la desazón provocada por la escasa distancia existente entre el cadáver y
el cuerpo ceroso de su representación, ya que aquél no es más que una sustitución, un pasaje de lo real a lo imaginario.
El presente trabajo ofrece un recorrido por las diferentes tipologías de objetos en cera efectuados en el pasado con la intención de vencer a la muerte o a la enfermedad sugiriendo la presencia de vida mediante la similitud entre la apariencia de la imagen y la de la persona que ya no está.
